What to do when the achiness starts

Joint pain can occur from a number of issues. And most of them are related to age or chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis, gout, tendinitis or rheumatoid arthritis to name a few. Some people may suffer from the condition due to sports injuries. While the condition may occur in any part of the body it commonly affects areas such as the shoulders, knees and hips. The pain is often accompanied by stiffness or inflammation and may seriously compromise a person’s ability to walk. There are no definitive cures for conditions that affect the joints. However, patients can make their pain more manageable with home remedies some of which are detailed below –

Massage

A good massage can relieve swelling by improving blood flow to the joints in areas such as the knees. This also reduces inflammation and improves the area’s range of motion in time. Make sure that you or the massage therapist applies less pressure on the painful areas. You can also use coconut, olive or mustard oil during the massage.

Cayenne

A study published in the Journal of Medical Association of Thailand found that gel containing capsaicin relieved symptoms in women who suffered from knee osteoarthritis. The women suffered from both moderate and mild pain. Do not use cayenne on open wounds since it causes a burning sensation when it is used on the skin.

Hot or Cold Compresses

This is an age old remedy. Cold compresses numb the area around affected joints and help reduce inflammation. Hot compresses on the other hand, increase blood flow, reduce pain and relax stiff muscles or joints. Alternating between the two can reduce joint pain faster.  Make sure that you separate the area and the hot or cold compress with a towel. Applying them directly will aggravate your condition. Place the hot compress on the area for three minutes before replacing it with the cold compress for one minute. Repeat the processes a few times a day for 20 minutes until you begin to feel the pain ebb away.

The Right Diet

Nutrients such as omega 3 fatty acids are great for patients no matter what type of arthritic condition they suffer from. These fatty acids reduce joint stiffness and pain. Add some spice to your food by adding turmeric to your diet. The ingredient has anti-inflammatory properties. Also try to include ingredients such as apple cider vinegar in your diet. This particular ingredient helps reduce joint pain by eliminating toxins from connective tissue and joints. It also happens to be rich in minerals such as potassium, phosphorous, calcium and magnesium all of which promote bone health. Food that is high in Vitamin C also promotes bone health.

It is important to remember that these remedies offer temporary relief. In other words, they won’t eliminate the pain completely. If you want to make the most of any treatment, wear gear that keeps your joints in place. For example, if you suffer from arthritic knees a knee brace will do.
